스튜어트 타운센드(Stuart Townsend). 1972년 생이니, 우리 나이로 서른일곱 살이다. 어릴 때 친구따라 연기학교에 다니면서 배우가 되었다고 한다. 영화 <트로잔 에디>로 데뷔한 뒤 <퀸 오브 뱀파이어>의 주연을 맡았다고 한다. 그의 필모그라피도 제법 길다. 검색해보니, 영화도 영화이지만 샤를리즈 테론과 함께 찍은 사진들이 더 많이 쏟아져 나온다.(내가 영화에 대해 뭐 아는 게 있나...) 어느 스포츠신문은 다음과 같이 전하고 있다. "남아공 출신의 배우 샤를리즈 테론이 아일랜드 출신의 배우 스튜어트 타운센드와 결혼한 사실이 드러났다. 타운센드는 영화 '퀸 오브 뱀파이어'와 '젠틀맨 리그' 등에 출연해 얼굴을 알린 배우다." 등등.
하지만 배우로서의 스튜어트 타운센드가 아니라, 감독-각본-제작자인 스튜어트 타운센드. 어쩌다가 그를 만났다. 그가 만든 <시애틀 전투>(Battle in Seattle, 2007)의 예고편과 같은 영상을 보았다. (아래에 유투브 영상물로 연결해 놓았다)
시애틀 전투, 이에 대해서 <한겨레>의 이제훈 기자는 다음과 같이 적고 있다.
"1994년 1월1일(북미자유무역협정 공식 발효일) 0시. 멕시코 치아파스주 라칸돈 정글에서 원주민으로 이뤄진 사파티스타민족해방군이 ‘신자유주의에 대한 4차 대전’을 선포했다. 이는 최초의 반세계화 투쟁으로 불린다. 그러나 반세계화 저항의 역사에서 이른바 ‘시애틀전투’가 더 도드라진다. 99년 11월 시애틀에서 열린 세계무역기구 3차 각료회의 개막식 지연과 회의 결렬을 이끌어낸 5만여 시위대의 활약은, 무한폭주할 것같던 (초국적)기업중심 신자유주의적 세계화가 간단치 않은 저항에 맞닥뜨렸음을 보여줬다. 그뒤 “시애틀 이후 모든 것이 달라졌다”는 말이 반세계화 진영 내부에 회자될만큼, ‘시애틀’은 ‘9·11’에 버금가는 의미있는 시대구분의 구획선으로 자리잡았다. 이후 세계무역기구·국제통화기금·세계은행 등 신자유주의적 세계화를 이끄는 국제기구의 회의가 열리는 곳은 수만에서 수십만에 이르는 시위대의 집결지로 변했다. 세계 시민사회운동단체들의 집중시위가 격화하자, 관련 국제기구들은 회의장소를 더욱 외진 곳으로 잡아, 시위대의 접근을 원천봉쇄하려하고 있다. 내년 선진8개국(G-8) 정상회의는 미국 조지아주 씨아일랜드라는 외딴 섬에서 열린다. 소니 퍼듀 주지사는 이섬을 “보안이 탁월한 개최지”라고 묘사했다. 칸쿤 회의장도 바다로 둘러싸여 길 하나만 봉쇄하면 접근이 원천적으로 불가능한 곳이었다. 세계 시민사회운동단체들은 이런 거리에서의 물리적인 ‘국제적 동원타격 투쟁’과 병행해 2001년부터는 브라질의 포르투알레그레에서 3년째 세계사회포럼을 열어 대안세계의 정책·조직적 비전을 가다듬어왔다. 월든 벨로 필리핀대 교수는, 세계사회포럼은 “반세계화 운동이 만나 교류하며 스스로를 확인하는 물리적·시간적 공간, 대안적 세계질서의 비전과 가치, 제도를 논의하고 정교하게 갈고 다듬는 장소를 제공한다”고 평가했다. 올 1월에 열린 3차 세계사회포럼에서는 2월15일을 국제반전투쟁의 날로 정한 뒤 조직화에 나서 세계 700여개 도시에서 1500만여명이 거리로 나와 ‘반전·평화’를 외치는 사상 초유의 동시투쟁을 이끌어내기도 했다. 스튜어트 타운센드가 감독-각본-제작자가 되어 바로 이 '시애틀 전투'를 하나의 장편 드라마 영화로 만든 것이다. 타운센드의 공식 팬사이트(http://www.stuarttownsend.org/)를 찾아 들어가니, 미국 각지의 팬들이 "이 영화를 한국으로 보내자"는 일종의 캠페인을 펼치고 있다. 왜? 거참 궁금한 일이다.
아무튼! 이 영상물을 보면서, 내가 생각하는 것은 이런 장편 드라마 영화의 내용(이 되고 남을 만한 것들)은 '시애틀 전투'의 것보다 우리가 한 열 배쯤은 더 많은 것 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다는 것이다. 아래에 인용되어 있는 밀란 군데라의 말처럼 "권력에 대항하는 민중의 투쟁은 망각에 대항하는 기억의 투쟁이다" 우리는 망각에 대해 대항해야 할 뿐만 아니라 왜곡에 대해서도 대항해야 한다, 무엇으로? 기억하는 것으로, 그리고 그 기억을 기록하고, 말하는 것으로.
이 영화가 나온 뒤, 운동가이자 작가인, 그리고 시애틀 전투에 참가했던 데이비드 솔닛(David Solnit)은 처음에 스튜어트 타운센드가 영화를 만들어? 그것도 시애틀 전투를? 라는 식의 반응을 보였다고 고백하고 있다. 아마도 그도 무언가 허를 찔린 듯했던 모양이다. 왜냐면, 투쟁의 이야기 자체가 투쟁의 장이 되는 것이 역사이기 때문이다. 투쟁에 대한 이야기를 전하는 주류 언론은 이 반세계화 운동에 참여했던 이들을 폭도로, 폭력적인 극단주의자로, 혹은 여피로 묘사했다는 것이다. <뉴욕타임스>의 칼럼니스트 토마스 프리드만처럼. 그는 이렇게 말하고 있다. 그런데 이제 배우 스튜어트 타운센드가 그 투쟁의 장에 뛰어들어 영화를 만들어낸 것이다. 잘할까? 잘 했을까? 데이비드 솔닛의 글에는 그런 뉘앙스가 묻어 나온다. 그리고 기억은 재구성된다. 재구성되어야만 한다.

A peaceful demonstration to stop the WTO talks quickly escalates into a full-scale riot, and soon a State of Emergency is declared by the Mayor of Seattle. The streets are mayhem, and the WTO is paralyzed. Caught in the crossfire of civil liberties and keeping the peace are Seattle residents, including its beleaguered mayor (Ray Liotta), a riot cop on the streets (Woody Harrelson) and his pregnant wife (Charlize Theron). The choices they all make will change their lives forever.
Writer/Director Stuart Townsend brings together this talented ensemble to intertwine different points of view – from protesters and police to delegates and doctors -- each of whom intentionally or accidentally find themselves on the streets of Seattle in those last days of the millennium. A Call to Social Movements to Reclaim Our History
In the fall of 2008, a major motion picture called "Battle in Seattle" will come out in cities across the country. The movie is a docu-drama—a fictional story based on real events—that features extensive archival footage. It may shape what most people in the US and around the world think happened for decades to come—unless we speak up. We call for social movements to take action: to reclaim our history, our stories, and our future.
The story of popular resistance to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle in 1999 is a story of how people power can change the world. It is a dangerous example for the global elite, and a powerful one for movements.
For eight years, the US corporate media, global elites, and their police have been twisting and marginalizing the truth, in order to invent their own story of Seattle 1999 and the stories of social movements' resistance and victories. These lies and revisions of history have been used in an attempt to criminalize and repress our protests, movements, and mobilizations.
The movie will be released on the eighth anniversary of the 1999 Seattle anti-WTO uprising and shutdown. It was written by a well-meaning actor-director, but is unlikely to reflect the motives, experience, or thinking of the movements behind the shutdown of the WTO. The potential is high and the possibilities are infinite to interrupt this narrative and claim the history that we helped create.
It's time that we in the social movements tell our own stories, reclaim our own histories, and publicly fight damaging myths of our movements past and present. We must intervene in the public understanding of what happened, what is happening, and what it all means. Stories are how we understand the world and thus shape the future—they are part of our fight against corporate power, empire, war, and social and environmental injustice and for the alternatives that will make a better world.
The real story of Seattle 1999 is of tens of thousands of people rising up, taking direct action, and changing history; standing up to corporations and governments and winning; joining with movements around the world in our common struggle against the WTO.

Let's link the 1999 resistance to the WTO in Seattle and globally with building support for today's 2007 resistance that is continuing the fight for global justice on many fronts; against war and occupation for environmental and climate justice; for workers, immigrants, women, and farmers rights, etc. We call for commemorations, public events, performances, media, interventions, interruptions, educational events, performances, screenings, gatherings, and celebrations.
