세계도서관정보대회는(World Library and Information Congress)는 국제도서관연맹(IFLA)의 연차총회로서 도서관인들이 다양한 경험과 지식을 공유하는 전 세계 도서관인들의 축제이자 만남의 장이다. 올해 제73차 WLIC에서는 IFLA의 각 부(Division), 분과(Section)에서 다양한 주제의 세션(Session)을 제공하며 이 외에도 평의회, 문화의 밤, 도서관방문, 전시회 등 다양한 프로그램으로 구성되어 있다.

2008 퀘벡 세계도서관정보대회(WLIC) 소식(1)-분과회의
세계도서관정보대회 기간 중에는 IFLA의 8개 부회(Divisions), 45개 분과(Sections)에서 주관하는 세션(Session)이 진행된다. 각 세션에서는 문헌정보학분야의 전문가들이 참가하여 다양한 주제의 연구논문을 발표하며, 2008 퀘벡 WLIC 대회의 각 부회․분과별회의 및 IFLA 공동주관회의는 다음과 같다.

2008 퀘벡 세계도서관정보대회(WLIC) 소식(2)-Satellite meetings
Satellite meeting은 WLIC기간 전후에 열리는 각종 워크숍, 라운드테이블, 연수프로그램 등으로 WLIC대회와는 별도로 개최되며 Pre-Conference(사전회의)라고도 한다. 올해에는 WLIC가 개최되는 퀘벡시 및 오타와, 토론토, 밴쿠버, 몬트리올, 미국 등에서 총14회의 Satellite meeting이 개최될 예정이다.

세계도서관정보대회(WLIC)에는 각종 학술회의뿐만 아니라 도서관 및 정보관련 분야의 업체 또는 기관이 참여하는 대규모 전시회가 열린다. 전 세계 도서관 및 정보관련 업체가 참가하여 도서관 및 정보화 관련 용품, 소프트웨어 등을 전시하고 홍보하며, 금년 퀘벡WLIC에서는 약 100여개의 업체가 참가하여 8월 10일부터 14일까지 운영된다.

□ 도서관방문
WLIC는 개최국의 도서관을 방문하는 프로그램을 마련, 대회 참가자들에게 개최국의 다양한 도서관 현장을 직접 방문하여 그 나라의 도서관 현황 및 발전상을 경험하는 기회를 제공한다. 2008 퀘벡대회에서는 퀘벡국립도서관(BAnQ)를 비롯하여 퀘벡 및 몬트리올 지역의 다양한 도서관을 방문하는「도서관방문(Library Tours)」프로그램을 마련, 8월 13~14일 양일간 운영한다.

멕시코의 빈민들이 교육과 경제활동의 기회를 얻을 수 있도록 지원하는 컴퓨터 인터넷 교육 프로그램이 이번 2008년도 빌&멜린다 게이츠 재단의 Access to Learning Award를 지난 8월 13일 캐나다 퀘벡에서 열린 세계도서관정보대회(WLIC)에서 수상하였다. 'Access to learning Award'는 빌&멜린다 게이츠 재단이 지난 2000년부터 미국을 제외한 공공도서관 중 일반인들이 자유롭게 정보에 접근할 수 있는 혁신적인 정보기술 프로그램을 개발한 곳에 주는 상으로 게이츠 재단에 따르면, 이번 1백만 달러의 상금은 멕시코 베라크루즈주의 바스코넬로스(Vasconelos)사업에 돌아갔으며, 무료로 이용할 수 있는 컴퓨터와 인터넷을 통하여 사람들을 지식 정보와 교육의 장으로 연결하려는 획기적인 노력이 이번 수상을 가능하게 했다고 하였다.
베라크루즈 주의 공교육 담당 사무관인 빅터 아렌돈도(Victor Arredondo)에 의해 창시된 바스코넬로스(Vasconelos)사업은 주 연방 당국에서 공공시설에 컴퓨터를 지원하고 있지만 주민들의 컴퓨터 사용능력 부족으로 컴퓨터가 효율적으로 운용되지 않고 있는 지역을 대상으로 한다. 빅터 아렌돈도 사무관은 이 사업으로 인해 지역 주민들이 컴퓨터와 인터넷을 통해 찾을 수 있는 기회의 세상을 이해하는 것을 넘어 21세기의 기술을 배우고자 하는 마음을 갖게 될 것이라 전망하고 있다. 올해 'Access to learning Award'는 전 시애틀공공도서관 관장이자, 현 게이츠 재단의 세계 도서관(Global Libraries) 대표, 드보라 제이콥스(Deborah Jacobs) 주관으로 개최되었다. 자세한 내용을 보시려면 여기를 클릭하시기 바랍니다.
