Here's a look at what's buzzing in the book world today:

New and Noteworthy: USA TODAY's Jocelyn McClurg picks the best new books on sale this week. Selections include Jerry Bruckheimer: When Lightning Strikes, a coffeetable book about the mega producer behind hit films like Top Gun andPirates of the Caribbean. Then there's Dangerous Women, edited byGardner Dozois and George R. R. Martin, a collection of tales about female heroines and villains. The action continues with Glorious War:The Civil War Adventures ofGeorge Armstrong Custer by Thom Hatch.

Housemaid's Daughter: Reviewer Patty Rhule calls Barbara Mutch's The Housemaid's Daughter(3.5 stars out of 4) a beautifully written and haunting novel. It tells the tale of "two women caught between South Africa's racial divide" in 1919.

Desolation of Smaug: USA TODAY's Brian Truitt tells us the five things we need to know about Smaug, the dastardly dragon in the blockbuster Hobbit sequel. Quick facts: he's voiced by a silken Benedict Cumberbatch, and is described in the book as being thin and wormlike.

Amazon's biggest books: Goodbye Fifty Shades of Grey, hello Inferno. The thriller by Dan Brown was Amazon's best-selling book of 2013. Other titles that did well wereAnd the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini and The Cuckoo's Calling by J.K. Rowling (under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith).

Book holiday sales: Bookstores and publishers across the nation are worried about holiday sales. E-books and sales on Amazon could cause shoppers to be reluctant to spend cash on print books, reports The New York Times. In addition, the late date for Thanksgiving this year shortened the holiday shopping period, giving publishers even more anxiety about getting people to shop in bookstores.

Morrissey autobiography: For music fans, no indie band is more revered than the Smiths, and the band's lead singer, Morrissey, has been propelled to cult icon status. In his self-titled autobiography (3.5 stars out of 4), he tells all about his rocker life, from his English upbringing to his rise as a musician. Reviewer Matt Damsker says the book is a "first-rate confessional," full of tidbits about the singer's intensely personal life, divulging details about his intimate relationships with men, women and music.

Trayvon: The parents of Trayvon Martin, the black teenager who was shot and killed in 2012, are planning to write a book about their son. The case was thrown into the national spotlight when Martin's killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

David Foster…Segel?: Actor Jason Segel, best known for comedic roles inForgetting Sarah Marshall and How I Met Your Mother, will star as author David Foster Wallace in an upcoming biopic. Titled The End of the Tour, the film follows Wallace's early days of literary fame, and is based on the book Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself by David Lipsky. The film will also star Jesse Eisenberg.

Bronx babies: Arlene Alda, the author, photographer and wife of actor Alan Alda, is writing a book called Just Kids from the Bronx. The book will feature first-person stories of people who grew up in the Bronx, from Al Pacino, to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, to novelist Mary Higgins Clark. It will be published by February 2015 and all profits from the book will go to benefiting children growing up in the Bronx.
