If I were to ask: what is a library? Your answer would surely include something about books. The Latin word for book (liber) is the root of the English word library. Traditionally, a library is a place where books and other reading materials are available to use or to borrow. This has been true for centuries but how long books will be the principal business of libraries is an open question. Because of changes in technology and in society, libraries everywhere are reassessing their proper place within their respective communities.

Take the Free Library of Philadelphia (FLP) as an example. One of the largest public library systems in the country, the FLP is blazing new territory for public libraries everywhere. The Parkway Central branch is the mothership of the City’s 55-library system. This magnificent building has been the focus of 10 years of planning for massive renovations that will be completed this year.

Six levels of stack-shelving have been cleared out and a million books moved to storage. Only a quarter of these volumes will be returned to the renovated space. Replacing the stacks will be numerous new opportunities: a common space for meetings, a business resource and innovation center, a teen center, and a cafe along with other smaller public spaces and services. This library -- like libraries everywhere -- will always be about books, but going forward it will be about much more.

Here in York, our own public library houses York’s varied media collection (books, video, sound recordings, etc.). It is on a very different scale from the FLP but each of these libraries exists in the same rapidly changing technological and cultural environment.

I spoke recently with Michelle Sampson, YPL’s executive director. She told me that every month between 7,000 and 8,000 people come into the York library. They come for many different reasons: books, yes, but also to read newspapers, attend meetings, to see films and other cultural events (lectures, poetry readings, concerts, art exhibits, etc.), to bring kids/grandkids to the Children’s Room for lap sits, to use the public computers, to get reference help from library staff, to meet clients or friends, to purchase used books. Thousands of visitors with hundreds of reasons to visit the YPL every month.

We are not the Free Library of Philadelphia but we face similar challenges and parallel questions about the future. Libraries are still about books but what will they be about tomorrow, next year and what about for the next generation of library patrons?

To help answer these questions, the YPL has embarked on a strategic plan. The library’s board of trustees appointed a Strategic Planning Committee to reassess the mission and the vision of York’s beautiful 25,000-square-foot building on Long Sands Road in the heart of the village. For many people, the YPL is the cultural heart of York. The question is: how can it remain so for residents and visitors alike? What do the people need and expect from their library now?

Part of the process of seeing the future is to hear from stakeholders. In the case of the library, there are many stakeholder groups -- town officials, library staff, school librarians, neighboring libraries -- but none is more important than the citizens of York. It is for this reason that the YPL Strategic Planning Committee will be holding a public meeting for people who would like to have their say about where the York library should be going.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 30, small groups will be established with facilitators and note takers to record everything people have to say. Several important questions have been raised by the committee. They want to know: What current services or events do patrons cherish and want to see maintained? What new services or features would they most appreciate? What do people think is the proper role of the library in this community? How can the library stay relevant going forward?

If you have ever been to the YPL (or even if you haven’t) the Strategic Planning Committee wants to hear from you. They want to know what you like and what you don’t; what you would like to see that is not on offer now.

Come to the forum to meet your neighbors. Refreshments will be available. Where? Well, at the library, of course, where so much happens each and every week of the year.
