국제박물관협의회(ICOM)의 박물관에 대한 새로운 정의 Museum Definition

박물관 정의 Museum Definition

2022년 8월 24일 프라하에서 국제박물관협의회(ICOM)의 특별 총회는 92,41%로 새로운 박물관 정의에 대한 제안을 승인했습니다(찬성: 487, 반대: 23, 기권: 17). 국제박물관협의회가 새롭게 규정한 박물관에 대한 정의는 다음과 같습니다. 

“박물관은 유형 및 무형 유산을 연구, 수집, 보존, 해석, 전시하는, 사회에 봉사하는 비영리 영구 기관입니다. 대중에게 개방되고 접근 가능하고 포괄적인 박물관은 다양성과 지속 가능성을 촉진합니다. 박물관은 교육, 즐거움, 성찰, 지식 공유를 위한 다양한 경험을 제공하면서, 윤리적으로, 전문적으로 그리고 지역 사회의 참여로 운영하고 의사 소통합니다.” 

“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”

올해 3년 만에 체코 프라하에서 열린 총회에서 새로 채택된 정의는 기존 비영리(non-profit)라는 단어를 비영리 추구(not-for-profit)로 완화하는 대신, 다양성과 윤리성을 강조했다. 즐거움(enjoyment) 제공의 기능이 복권된 것도 주목할 지점이다.
