1876년 창립된 미국도서관협회(ALA)의 첫번째 아프리카계 미국인 사무총장 트래시 홀. 홀은 자유로운 독서권 확보를 위한 투쟁, 도서검열과 도서관 예산 삭감에 대한 투쟁의 최전선에 있는 인물로, 올해 타임지 선정 100대 인물(2023TIME100)입니다. 『파친코』의 작가 이민진(Min Jin Lee)은 홀에 대해 “홀의 책과 도서관에 대한 사랑은 동시대 사람뿐만 아니라 다가올 모든 사람의 해방을 위해, 우리가 증오와 거짓말에서 해방될 수 있음을 가르쳐줍니다.”라고 소개했습니다. 2023년 4월 26일 타임지 100대 인물 갈라쇼에서 행한, 홀의 연설을 여기에 옮겨 놓습니다.

나는 하나의 신념을 대표하기 때문에 여기에 있습니다. 이야기가 우리의 세계관을 변화시킬 수 있다는 믿음. 그리고 모든 사람의 이야기는 그러한 기회를 가질 자격이 있다는 믿음. 그런 이야기를 담고 있는 책은 그것을 찾는 독자에게 접근 가능해야 한다는 믿음. 그리고 학교도서관, 대학도서관, 공공도서관, 교도소도서관처럼 이러한 변화가능성을 품은 이야기를 담고 있는 책이 있는 도서관은 언제나 무료로 제공되어야 하며 열려 있어야 한다는 믿음.

나는 한 사람의 도서관인으로서 이 자리에 서 있습니다. 폭탄 위협과 투옥 위협에도 불구하고 미국도서관협회의 비전인 이러한 말이 항상 진실이 되도록 싸우고 있는 이 나라 전역의 수천 명의 ‘사서―전사들’librarians—warriors과 함께 이 자리에 서 있습니다.

자신의 일을 하고, 자신의 생각을 확신을 가지고 펼침으로써, 우리의 삶을 좀 더 자유롭게 만들어준, 이 자리에 있는 모든 분들께 경의를 표합니다. 그리고 나는 자유로운 사람들이 생각하고, 창조하고, 살고, 읽는다는 사실을 다시 상기하고자 합니다. 자유로운 사람은 자유롭게 읽습니다.

I am here only because I represent a belief. The belief that stories can transform the way that we see the world. And that everyone’s—everyone’s—story deserves that opportunity. The belief that the books that contain those stories should be accessible to the readers that seek them. And that the libraries—the school libraries, the academic libraries, the public libraries, and yes, the prison libraries—that contain the books that contain those transformational stories should always be free and open to the public that they were built to serve.  

I am here as a librarian standing with thousands of librarians—warriors— across this country, who, despite bomb threats and threats of jail time are fighting to ensure that these words that stand as a vision of the American Library Association will always ring true:
