People Turing to Libraries During Economic Downturn

YAKIMA, Wash. - In tough economic times, visiting the library is helping many people save money.

Staff at the Downtown Yakima branch say registration for library cards has been up by about five to 10 percent annually for the past three years.

Clara Eustis is the manager of the downtown branch. She says people have tight budgets and can no longer afford to buy certain items that have always been at the library.

"Some people used to buy their own books and now they decided it's gotten to be pretty expensive," says Eustis. "They're trying to cut back in different things and they discover once again the library is a great value."

The American Libraries Associations (ALA) tracks usage at libraries during slumps in the economy. The number of people using libraries during this period is above previous economic downturns, according to a 2008 ALA report.

The increase in visitors, however, does not make the library immune from its own financial trouble. Eustis says the need for items besides books creates a tight squeeze for the library.

"We have to kind of reevaluate how we spend our funds as far as collections," says Eustis. "Since more people are asking for electronic resources, we kind of have to take a look at our collections policies and say maybe we shouldn't be buying as many books."

To get your own library card, visit your nearest branch and bring photo ID as well as proof of local residence. After filling out a one-page form, you will get a card in a matter of minutes.
