뉴스위크의 100대 명저

시사주간지 뉴스위크가 세계 100대 명저를 선정하여 발표하였다 합니다. 일별해 둘 필요가 있으리라 생각합니다. "도대체 뭔 책을 뽑은 거야?" 하고 말입니다. 아니 이 100권 중에 제대로 읽은 책이 한 권도 없다면? 지금부터 죽을 때까지 읽을 거야 하고 마음이라도 먹으면 좋겠지만, 꼭 다 읽어야 하는 것은 아닐 것입니다.

뉴스위크가 선정한 세계 100대 명저

 

미국 시사주간지 뉴스위크는 역대 세계 최고의 저서로 러시아 작가 레오 톨스토이의 소설 `전쟁과 평화'를 선정하는 등 주요 언론사와 대형 도서관 등의 추천 도서 목록과 관련 기록 등을 토대로 100대 명저를 뽑아 공개했다.

30일 뉴스위크에 따르면 19세기 나폴레옹의 러시아 침공을 시대 배경으로 전쟁의 참상과 사랑을 그린 소설인 `전쟁과 평화'가 1위에 올랐고 조지 오웰의 `1984년'(2위), 제임스 조이스의 `율리시스'(3위) 등이 뒤를 이었다. 10대 명저 내에는 러시아 출신의 작가 블리디미르 나보코프의 `롤리타', 윌리엄 포크너의 `음향과 분노', 랠프 엘리슨의 `보이지 않는 사람', 버지니아 울프의 `등대로', 고대 그리스 작가 호메로스의 `일리아드와 오디세이', 제인 오스틴의 `오만과 편견', 단테의 `신곡' 등이 포함됐다.

제프리 초서의 `캔터베리 이야기', 조너선 스위프트의 `걸리버 여행기', 제롬 데이비드 샐린저의 `호밀밭의 파수꾼', 마거릿 미첼의 `바람과 함께 사라지다', 스콧 피츠제럴드의 `위대한 개츠비' 등이 11~20위에 들었다.  21∼30위에는 존 스타인벡의 `분노의 포도', 인도 출신의 작가 살만 루시디의 `자정의 아이들', 알렉시스 토크빌의 `미국의 민주주의', 버지니아 울프의 `댈러웨이 부인', 찰스 다윈의 `종의 기원', 장 자크 루소의 `사회 계약론', 칼 마르크스의 `자본론' 등이 뽑혔다.  

 

마키아벨리의 `군주론', 토머스 홉스의 `리바이어던', 조 로널드 루얼 톨키엔의 `반지의 제왕', 플로베르의 `마담 보바리', 존 밀턴의 `실락원', 톨스토이의 `안나 카레리나', 헤밍웨이의 `누구를 위하여 종은 울리나', 조지 오웰의 `동물 농장', 프로이드의 `꿈의 해석', 존 메이너드 케인즈의 `고용, 이자, 화폐의 일반이론' 등도 100대 명저에 이름을 올렸다.

셰익스피어는 `햄릿', `리어왕', `오셀로', `소네트' 등 작품 4개가 49~52위에 나란히 오르는 등 가장 많은 작품을 100대 명저에 올렸고 톨스토이와 버지니아 울프, 윌리엄 포크너, 조지 오웰, 헤밍웨이 등은 각각 저서 2권 이상이 100대 명저에 뽑혔다.(김성용 특파원)
