Electronic life has “wiped out books”, as adults prefer to check their emails and smartphones to picking up a paperback while on the move, Dame Jacqueline Wilson has said.
Dame Jacqueline, the children’s author, said she finds it “sad” to see adults are not reading as much as they used to, claiming she is often the only one on a train journey now holding a book.
The writer, who has produced more than 100 books over a 35-year career, said that while children still have huge appetite for reading, thanks in part to encouragement from their schools, adults increasingly appear to prefer their smartphones.
"I find it sad that adults aren't reading as much," she told the BBC."On the train 10 years ago people were reading books - I would love trying to work out what titles they were reading."Now I'll be the only person with a book on my lap and everyone else is glued to their smartphones or checking emails. Electronic life has wiped out books."Dame Jacqueline, the former children’s laureate, will honoured with a Special Award at the Bafta Children's ceremony on Sunday night, for her contribution to literacy and inspiring young people's love of reading.
Asked about the changes she had seen in her career, she pointed to technology and social media in raising levels of “worry”.
"Girls worry even more now about how they look and there's an expectation that there wasn't 20 years ago,” she said. “‘Look cool with shiny hair and be bright and chirpy and popular with girls - and boys!'.
"It's a bit of a challenge to be a young person now. I still get lots of letters and emails and people have the same issues - but children feel more worried than they used to."
Statistics suggest that sales of books are in fact rising, with a report earlier this year finding Mintel sales of physical books are forecast to rise by 6 per cent this year to £1.7 billion while sales of e-books are predicted to fall by 1 per cent to £337 million in 2017.
The rise in physical sales has been put down to an increasing desire for owners show off their personality and intellect through their book collections.
Popular titles of recent years include the satirical Ladybird for Grown-Ups series, mindful colouring books and cook books, as well as fiction.
