‘스노보크라시’(속물지배)란 낯선 용어는 어느 사이엔가 우리 사회에 미만한 야만의 징후를 특정하는 일반명사가 돼버렸다. 오로지 돈과 사익을 쫓아 들쥐처럼 내달리는, 이 만개한 속물의 전성시대에 ‘잘 사는 것’이란 대체 무엇인가.
아시아와 유럽, 중남미, 아프리카 등지에서 날아온 철학자 20여명이 1일 서울 이화여대 인문관에 모여 머리를 맞댔다. 이들은 지난 몇 개월 동안 ‘좋은 삶’(good life)이란 공통의 화두와 씨름해왔다. 이날부터 나흘간 열리는 제8회 국제 상호문화 철학대회는 각자가 풀어낸 화두의 의미를 교환하고 토론하는 자리다. 1995년 시작된 이 행사는 철학의 서구 중심성을 극복하고 상이한 문화들 사이의 소통과 이해를 증진시킬 목적으로 2년마다 대륙을 돌며 회의를 열고 있다.
철학자의 발표문에서 느껴지는 흥미로운 사실은 속해 있는 문화권에 따라 그들이 말하는 ‘좋은 삶’의 양상에서 미묘한 차이가 관찰된다는 것이다. 유럽과 아시아, 아랍권이 다르고, 같은 대륙이라도 살고 있는 국가의 정치·경제·문화적 상황에 따라 강조점에 차이가 있다.
베르벨 프리슈만 독일 에어푸르트대 교수는 피히테 철학의 전통에 기대어 좋은 삶을 ‘자기결정적 삶’과 동일시한다. 그는 자기결정적 삶의 가능 조건으로 공동체를 구성하는 타인과의 상호존중, 개인의 자유를 보증하는 확고한 법률 상태를 꼽는다. 오스트리아 출신인 한스 셸크스호른 빈대 교수는 ‘논쟁적 대화’를 좋은 삶의 구성 요소로 파악한 소크라테스의 관점에 주목한다. 논쟁과 담론을 통해 자신과 상대방의 오류를 비판적으로 극복해가는 과정이야말로 유럽인의 삶 속에 비판적 사유와 민주주의의 전통이 자리잡게 만든 원동력이었다는 것이다.
아시아권으로 넘어오면 사정이 달라진다. 트란투안퐁 베트남 사회과학원 철학연구소장은 ‘수양’을 좋은 삶의 핵심 요소로 제시한다. 좋은 삶은 타인과 세계, 우주와의 조화로운 생활 속에서만 확보될 수 있는데, 이것을 가능케 하는 것이 내면과의 소통인 수양이라는 것이다. 사키코 기타가와 일본 도쿄대 교수는 신자유주의 세계화에 동반된 ‘개인화’ 경향을 비판한다. 그가 볼 때 오늘날의 세계화는 제3세계의 가난하고 억압받는 인민들을 향해 기존의 규범과 관습들을 폐기하고 ‘개인의 자율성’이란 관념을 받아들이도록 강제하는데, 문제는 이런 자율적 주체의 관념이 인간의 모든 결정을 개인의 자유의지에 내맡기게 함으로써 인민의 삶을 제약하는 물질적·사회적 조건들을 외면하게 만든다. 따라서 좋은 삶을 확보하기 위해선 정의와 권리, 자율성 같은 개념들의 추상성부터 극복하는 것이 철학자에 주어진 임무라고 사키코 교수는 말한다.
한편 아랍-이슬람권 출신인 사르한 드호위브 튀니스대 교수는 ‘행복’을 “자신을 둘러싼 세계를 낯설게 느끼고 그것을 향해 가차없는 비판을 가하는 철학자에 의해서만 성취될 수 있는 것”이라고 본다. 율법과 관습이 지배하는 무슬림 사회에서 좋은 삶이란 주어진 모든 전통과 질서를 의문시하면서 오직 사색과 성찰을 통해 삶과 세계의 의미를 찾아가는 과정임을 역설하고 있는 셈이다.
4일까지 계속되는 이번 행사는 2일까지 ‘좋은 삶에 대한 고전적 의미’를 주제로 한 분과토론을 마무리짓고, 3일 ‘현대 정치와 교육에서의 좋은 삶의 의미’에 대해 토론을 진행한다. 마지막날에는 한국의 다문화주의를 주제로 국내 철학자들이 참석하는 원탁토론도 마련된다. (02)3277-6592.
