2018 International Symposium-Bookstart

The 2018 Bookstart International Symposium hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Do Jong-hwan) and by the Book Culture Foundation (Chairman Do Jung-il) will be held at Seoul International Press Conference Center on the 19th at 2 pm.

'Bookstart' is a public-private cooperative reading exercise that presents a bookstart bag with a picture book to babies with the intention of 'Let's start life with books', and carries out follow-up programs such as parent education and book play. 'Book Start' is a life-cycle-first reading program that creates a family culture to read to babies, allowing parents and babies to enjoy reading time and to develop intellectual and emotional abilities through picture books.

Beginning in 1992 at Booktrust in the UK, 'Bookstart' is now spreading around the world. In Korea, since 2003, the Book Culture Foundation(Bookstart Korea) has been expanding since the introduction of 'Bookstart'. Currently, 136 local governments and 302 institutions are implementing 'Bookstart'.

Part 1 of this symposium discusses the current status and issues of 'Bookstart' in Japan, Colombia, Thailand, and Korea. ▲Tetsu Shirai. Representative, NPO Bookstart Japan NPO ブックスタート will present the 18 Years of Bookstart in Japan, which started in 2000, ▲Diana Carolina Rey Quintero, Directora Ejecutiva en Fundalectura, Managing Director of Columbia Fundalectura, Bookstart in Columbia, a Silent Revolution, ▲Suthathib Thajchayapong, the Vice President of Thaibby, the Bookstart as the first reading program in Thailand which distributed books to all children throughout the country, ▲(virtually) Adriaan Langendonk, programmacoördinator Kunst van Lezen, Stichting Lezen/Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Netherlands), BoekStart en de Bibliotheek op school of Netherlands ▲ Ahn Chan-soo, the director general of Korea's Book Culture Foundation, plans to announce the value and meaning of 'Bookstart, as a public activity common to human society.'

In addition to academic conferences, ▲ Bookstart picture book discussions with publisher and picture book writers, ▲Exploring Bookstart Korea- Introduction of Bookstart Korea activities ▲Bookstart Round table Conference, Current challenges and opportunities for Bookstart program in the reading environment change with Bookstart Korea committee members.
